Use Remote signout feature in gmail.

If you forgot to signout from your Gmail account after using it, it can create lots of problems especially if you used a public computer. Gmail’s remote signout feature is a great blessing to those who forget to signout every now and then.

How to use remote signout feature in Gmail

While going through the Gmail blog I came acroos this tutorial by Erwin D’Souza, Gmail Engineer, which helped in enriching my knowledge.

At the bottom of your inbox, you’ll see information about the time of the last activity on your account and whether it’s still open in another location

You can see more details about your account activity by clicking Details link:

The top table, under “Concurrent session information,” indicates all open sessions, along with IP address and “access type” — which refers to how email was retrieved, for example, through iGoogle, POP3 or a mobile phone. The bottom table, under “Recent activity,” contains your most recent history along with times of access. You can also view my current IP address at the very bottom of this window, where it says “This computer is using IP address…”

With this information, you can quickly verify that all the Gmail activity was indeed yours. You can also click on the “Sign out all other sessions” button to sign out of the account you left open somewhere else.

6. Enable “Always use HTTPS.HTTPS is used to encrypt data as it is transmitted between computers on the Internet, so look for the “https” in the URL bar of your browser to make sure that the connection between your computer and Gmail’s servers is encrypted.HTTPS can make your mail slower, but safety comes first so it is better using HTTPS.Open Settings and choose “Always use HTTPS” on the General tab if you want to turn it on.

How to prevent being cheated on social networks

In olden days thieves used to rob us at night when all the family members were asleep. In this modern era Cyber thieves or Cheaters rob us during the day time, with our permission. Most of us are ignorant, or just don’t bother about it.

Most of the important safety features provided by the social networking sites revolve around a friendship request. People believe strangers are danger, but thieves are common people and mingle among us. They are not strangers, even though you believe that your identity is safe, it may not be!

In the western world, photo privacy may not be an issue, but in a conservative country like India, people take much care to protect their images.Once someone can lay hand on your image, it will be a difficult task to set the image right, especially for women.
How cyber thieves gain access?

Whenever a new person wants to be your friend,a new friendship request is sent by that person to you. Once you accept that friend request, he/she gets access to most of your online activities on that social networking site, including albums, scraps, walls and so on.

STEPS IN CHEATING

I.When a thief or someone you hate want access to your profile, they just create a fake ID.

A.If you are a woman, they will create ID of a woman and vice versa in case you are a man, to avoid suspiction.

B.Add some of your friends to his/her friends list to create an air of familiarity

C.Wait for some days and create a lot of scraps.

D. Create an album with simple images.

E.Write some testimonials from other fake ID’s

F. Send a friendship request to you.

Most of the time, people accept friendship request from a stranger who is trusted by everyone else and falls in the trap just like everyone else.

Some people avoid falling in this trap, but the cyber thief doesn’t back off, he comes with renewed power and energy, this time he/she changes his/her strategy.

II. Create a duplicate ID of one of your friends.

A.Most of the time we don’t care in adding someone a second time, eventhough we already have him/her in our friends list.

B.”Add me,My other ID just got deleted” or “My other ID got hacked, this is my new ID” or “Ignore messages from my old ID, this is my new one”

III. Create a new ID of one of your OLD friends who is not a member of the social networking site and who is not in regular touch with you.

IV.Create a false login page and steal your password.

This is the most dangerous of all. Sometime you may get emails from the networking sites like orkut or facebook with links to their homepages. Some thieves use this method to steal your password. They send emails to your email account with a fake ID similar to the orkut/facebook mailing lists. When you click on the links you get redirected to a false homepage which looks exactly similar.

Most of the people who are unaware of this trap, just log in and surrender their password to the thief.

V. Sending greeting cards to all in your contacts list.

This is a new type of fraud, choosing festive seasons as seasons for fraud. I got this email, with a nice Christmas card. I clicked on the card and was taken to a website with a single Christmas card. I liked the card so much that I wanted to send it to my friends and relatives. I searched for the option to send christmas card and clicked on the link.

I was redirected to another page which requested me to enter my email ID and password to fetch my contacts. I sensed the fraud and resisted the temptation to enter my account details.Though I liked the Christmas card, I valued my email account and password even more.

One password is linked to ten other passwords. When you lose your mail password, you lose your Bank ,paypal, facebook and a lot of other sensitive information in the mail accounts. And most of the time, passwords are same across different sites we visit.
HOW to avoid being cheated

1.Don’t add strangers

2. Call and inquire this friend

3.Lookout for duplicate ID’s

4.Avoid keeping sensitive data in your online profile. This is the easiestt step which will save you a lot of headache!

5. Don’t click on suspicious links.

Look on the addressbar and confirm the homepage of your favorite websites.

6.Don’t give away passwords to send greeting cards.

Though I have covered only a few of the frauds, hope this enlightens you to learn more.

Orkut tips to protect your privacy

Orkut can be a tricky playground, where rules can be bent and broken just as a small twig is broken. The privacy barriers set by you can be broken in no time by a seasoned criminal. Some of the tricks used by a hacker can be complicated, some other tricks are just simple.

I have seen tips on many websites providing information on breaking orkut rules, improving scraps etc.

Security features

Orkut offers many security features, best of them are scrap privacy, album privacy.

Allowing only friends to visit your scrapbook is the best feature, because criminals can work better if they know you better through your scraps. Photo albums can be made private or public. The best method is to selectively allow albums to be viewed as per privacy requirement. You can select friends one by one or allow or friends to view your album. Allowing select friends is a better feature because we can select people whom we personally know and whose accounts are authentic.

Google image swirl-an interactive flash experience

Google Image search is a wonderful utility which allows people to find out the best images suited for our Powerpoint presentations. Google image swirl is a feature which is interactive and fun.Usually in google image search a list of images is shown which can be further expanded to related images search. In Google image swirl the same thing happens but it is wonderful to see how it shows up.12 image thumbnails appear and on clicking on one of the images it becomes the center image surrounded by related images.

I searched for Eiffel tower and got the following images as results

Once you find the group of images you’re interested in, you can click on the thumbnail and a cluster of images will “swirl” into view. For example, here’s what you’ll see if you click the image of the Eiffel Tower:

You can then further explore additional sub-groups within any cluster. The interface may look familiar to those of you who have tried Google’s Wonder Wheel available in the Search Options panel, which enables you to explore related search queries.

Image Swirl expands on technologies developed for Similar Images and Picasa Face Recognition to discern how images should be grouped together and build hierarchies out of these groups. Each thumbnail on the initial results page represents an algorithmically-determined representative group of images with similar appearance and meaning. These aren’t just the most relevant images — they are the most relevant groups of images.

Image Swirl currently works for more than 200,000 queries and Google plans to include more queries in the future. Available queries will auto-complete as you start to type in the search box, similar to Google Suggest.

Use in your preferred language in orkut, gmail

Some features in gmail and orkut are under utilized, preferred language setting is one of those. Using Indian languages in emails can be a new and wonderful experience, especially while conversing with family members and relatives. I was ignorant of this function even though it appeared on the upper left hand side of compose message.

Just type in English and gmail will automatically translate it into your preferred language. Since malayalam is my mothertongue, I use malayalam in my emails. I just have to type in english ie Manglish and I get a neat malayalam output from gmail.

How to switch between english and your language

When I started using malayalam, I had a doubt, how to revert back to english while composing a mail?

I got the answer soon enough
Just use Ctrl+G

Using Ctrl+G helps you toggle between English and your language, in my case Malayalam.

This tool has improved my productivity and my emails are more personalized now.Hope this tip helps you a lot too. This tip also works in Orkut, iGoogle,Blogger.

Make firefox lightning fast with these tweaks

Mozilla firefox is one of the most useful web browsers ever invented. Though Firefox have claimed to have improved many of its old settings, it still takes time to respond to a query. Since my Firefox was taking a lot of my time, I just shifted to Google chrome for a while. Now I have got some fantastic news on how to improve Firefox speed and I tried it on my Firefox version. These tricks are quite old and mozilla firefox developers have already incorporated some of these tricks in firefox.

TECHNIQUE 1

Use Fasterfox Firefox extension, which will speed up your browser speed if you have a good PC and a good internet connection. FasterFox basically increases your speed by recycling all the idle bandwidth, and makes it load your pages faster.Dynamic speed increases can be obtained with Fasterfox’s unique prefetching mechanism, which recycles idle bandwidth by silently loading and caching all of the links on the page you are browsing. For the best experience with Fasterfox, I recommend the Turbo-Charged setting.

To know more about fasterfox, visit :http://fasterfox.mozdev.org/

TECHNIQUE 2

1. Type “about:config” into the address bar and hit return. Scroll down and look for the following entries:network.http.pipeliningnetwork.http.proxy.pipeliningnetwork.http.pipelining.maxrequestsNormally the browser will make one request to a web page at a time. When you enable pipelining it will make several at once, which really speeds up page loading.2. Alter the entries as follows: (by double clicking them)Set “network.http.pipelining” to “true”Set “network.http.proxy.pipelining” to “true”Set “network.http.pipelining.maxrequests” to some number like 30. This means it will make 30 requests at once. (I changed mine to 100, works great.)3. Lastly right-click anywhere and select New-> Integer. Name it “nglayout.initialpaint.delay” and set its value to “0″. This value is the amount of time the browser waits before it acts on information it recieves

Windows actually reserves 20% of your bandwidth for purposes we will never know.If we can reclaim this bandwidth, we can improve the speed of our browser.
Step 1:Click ?Start?, and go on ?Run?, and type in ?gpedit.msc?.
Step 2: You should see ?Group Policy? open.
Step 3: Double-Click on ?Computer Configuration?.
Step 4: Double-Click on ?Administrative Templates?
Step 5: Double-Click on ?Network?
Step 6: Double-Click on ?QOS Packet Scheduler?
Step 7: Double-Click on ?Limit Reservable Bandwidth?
Step 8: Check the box that says ?Enabled? and change Bandwidth Limit (%) to 0.
You browser just got a 20% increase ion its speed!
These are some of those tricks which are time tested and works well.If you have any more tricks to increase Firefox speed kindly share in the comments section.

Best 11 ways to speed up your windows computer

When my home PC was running very slow,I needed some way to speed it up. I knew some installed programs were slowing it down but didn’t know which ones,so I just did a google search and found out that the Java updates running on my computer were slowing my PC down. When I uninstalled the java updates, my computer became a lot faster and is running fine now. Thanks for the tips from the Microsoft site, I found it much more comfortable working on my PC.

This post is made up of useful tips from different websites, those which I found to be most useful.

These tips come from Microsoft

1.Free up disc space

Use Disk Cleanup to:

Remove temporary Internet files.

Remove downloaded program files (such as Microsoft ActiveX controls and Java applets).

Empty the Recycle Bin.

Remove Windows temporary files such as error reports.

Remove optional Windows components that you don’t use.

Remove installed programs that you no longer use.

Remove unused restore points and shadow copies from System Restore.

2. Speed up access to data
Speed up access to data by running disc defragmenter utility listed in system tools.
When to run Disk Defragmenter
In addition to running Disk Defragmenter at regular intervals?monthly is optimal?there are other times you should run it too, such as when:

You add a large number of files.

Your free disk space totals 15 percent or less.

You install new programs or a new version of Windows.

3. Detect and repair disk errors
As you use your hard drive, it can develop bad sectors. Bad sectors slow down hard disk performance and sometimes make data writing (such as file saving) difficult, or even impossible. The Error Checking utility scans the hard drive for bad sectors, and scans for file system errors to see whether certain files or folders are misplaced.
To run the Error Checking utility:

Close all open files.

Click Start, and then click My Computer.

In the My Computer window, right-click the hard disk you want to search for bad sectors, and then click Properties.

In the Properties dialog box, click the Tools tab.

Click the Check Now button.

In the Check Disk dialog box (called Error-checking in Windows 7), select the Scan for and attempt recovery of bad sectors check box, and then clickStart.

4. Protect your computer against spyware

5.Use Readyboost to speed up your computer
If you’re using Windows 7 or Vista, you can use ReadyBoost to speed up your system

Source:Microsoft

Surfing across webpages I found out new ways to speedup my computer. Some of these tips were already known to me, and some others were new.

6.Clean up your Desktop
My desktop used to be filled up with all sort of junk, images, saved webpages, documents etc. As these files kept on accumulating, my PC got slower and slower.I knew that the more files you have on the desktop, the slower will be your PC .I came across this article which explains how cleaning up desktop can speed up my computer.

“Each time Windows starts, operating memory is used for all files on the Desktop. If those files are Shortcuts, the total amount of memory used will be small. If however, there are several or dozens of files on the Desktop, those will use lots of operating memory, essentially for no purpose or gain. With less memory available, the computer runs slower because it has to swap out information from operating memory to the hard drive. It does this process (called memory paging) to keep everything the user wants to do, running at the same time.”
Source:About.com

Creating a single folder and moving all those files scattered on the desktop will help you increase the speed of your PC to a great extent.

7.Adjust Visual effects

If you are running low on memory and your computer is running slow, it is better to avoid visual effects especially with Windows Vista and Windows7.

8.Turn off unnecessary windows Services

Turning off unnecessary windows services can save you a lot of memory and working time. Most of these services are not required for a common user and these are just for adding updates or for Research purpose.

Some of windows services which can be turned off are

Automatic Updates
Error Reporting Service
Human Interface Device Access
IMAPI CD-Burning COM Service
Windows Messenger
Security Center
Task Scheduler
Windows Firewall/Internet Connection Sharing (ICS):
Disable if you have another firewall like Norton running

For more Windows services which can be turned off

9.Do a shut down/reboot also known as a cold reboot
Though I have known it for years from experience that, shutting down and restarting a PC can indeed speed it up.I never had an idea that it is known as Cold reboot. Thanks to wikihow I have a new term and a new concept. This is how wikihow explains the idea
“Some programs do not release memory properly when they close. Even doing a warm restart will not release some of the drivers and other core programs in memory. The computer has to be completely shut down and then restarted. The Windows system is designed to hold on to those programs for a period of time. Shutting down the system for 30 seconds will cause the chips to “forget” the settings, an they will start anew when you restart the system. Curing these ‘Memory Leaks’ is as simple as rebooting the machine when it starts getting sluggish.”

10.Run CCleaner

I have been using Ccleaner for quite much time, and didn’t think of listing it here, but on second thought Ccleaner can be included here as it is a freeware and trusted by millions of users all over the world.CCleaner optimizes, fixes registry and prtects privacy.
Some other softwares which I use to clean up my computer are

System Mechanic Professional
Advanced System optimizer

Last but not the least

11.Format your computer and reinstall windows

In some cases whatever you do, your computer will not speed up. It means that your system has some major problems or it is filled with viruses and spam bots. It is better to format your C drive and Reinstall windows, install a good antivirus and scan all other drives before proceeding. Formatting your drive once in a while is a great way to keep your system fresh.

Hope you have enjoyed reading this post, if you like it leave your comments below as I am looking forward to updating this post with new ideas.

Firefox tips for Beginners

Mozilla Firefox is one of the best web browsers which I have come across.Though Firefox offers many possibilities, most of us are just ignorant of these shortcuts which Firefox have published in its home page.So I thought of organizing these favorites to build a list of shortcuts and tips for Firefox first time users.

Zoom In, Zoom Out

This basic functionality,I hope everyone knows. When text appears too tiny to read, use Ctrl+Plus to increse the font size and use Ctrl+minus to decrease the font size.

Try These Tab Tricks

Tabbed browsing helps us to open lots of webpages in just one window. Opening and closing tabs will always come handy even for a beginner.

Add Bookmarks easily

Bookmarking the webpages you like will help you recheck new content on those webpages, without having to worry about remembering the addresses of these pages. Bookmarking tool should be used with caution as a lot of bookmarks will pull you back from reading those bookmarked pages again.Using firefox we can add bookmarks easilyby clicking on the * button at the beginning of the addressbar.

Know whether the site is secure

Firefox makes it easy to determine if sites are what they say they are ? just click on the site icon for an instant identity overview.

Other Keyboard Shortcuts

Firefox is full of keyboard shortcuts designed to make your life easier. Some of these shortcuts maybe more useful, and you may use it every minute! Ctrl+T is my most favorite Firefox shortcut.

There are many other shortcuts like F5 to refresh a page,Ctrl+Enter to add www.com to any name we type on the addressbar etc.I have found many of these shortcuts very useful in my online life.

A flashback into webhistory

Taking a screenshot of weblife will be a great experience to everyone who has lived a long weblife. Yesterday when I went through all of my webhistory I discovered myself. I discovered something I have been wishing long time for, myself. I love the way I used to think when I was younger, with ambitions and visions on future. When I read through these weblinks I see I want to strive for, leaving all the bad memories behind

My webhistory as described by google dates back to January 2008. At the time of the great recession, and I was interested in stock markets at that time.

How to prevent firefox from crashing again

I have been using Firefox from the time I began using internet. I love the way firefox works ,through addons and extensions. Though firefox can be a great utility for browsers and download freaks alike,it has some problems too, which can be fixed.

Firefox’s Problems

* The main problem I have encountered with firefox is that when we add bookmarks day after day, firefox slows down and when bookmarks become unbearable to firefox it hangs and crashes.
* I am an addon lover, every time I fins a new useful addon I add it to my firefox. Again the problem occur, firefox hangs and crashes. When the firefox is restarted, all the tabs and windows which were open at the time firefox crashed, tries to open again resulting in a further crash. Crash by crash becomes an avalanche, pulling all your valuable bookmarks and addons along with it. The only option which remains is uninstalling firefox and reinstalling it again.

Reasons for Firefox crash

* Incompatible or Buggy Extensions
* Buggy Plugins
* Upgrading an Old 2.x Profile to 3.0
* Compatibility Problems with XP
* Video Card Drivers
* Tablet PC Incompatibility

How can we fix these problems?

1.Run in Safe Mode

If Firefox no longer crashes while running in Safe Mode, then you know you have an issue with one of the following:

* Plugins
* Extensions
* Settings
* Profile

2.Create a New Profile (if Safe Mode Fixes Your Issue)

3.Disable Unnecessary Plugins

4.Disable Unnecessary Extensions

5.Clear Out the Caches

6.XP Users: Run Firefox in Compatibility Mode

7.Do NOT Use the Tablet PC Input Panel (or OnScreen Keyboard)

If none of these works, Backup bookmarks and saved passwords with MozBackup utility and completely uninstall firefox.Reinstall firefox.

How to Increase webtraffic to your blog

Increase webtraffic tips

1. Post regularly

Posting regularly to the blog is the most important tip anyone can give. Posting frequency is the one and the most important factor in bringing you repeat visitors.I used to post regularly in my college days, but when I got entangled in the studies, my readership began to dwindle. But now I have started posting again, and my readership is steadily increasing.

2.Content is King as always

Know what your reader is looking for. My users are mostly looking for proxy and bypassing censorship tips and some technical hacks which help to reduce the workload. I post what I find out from other websites and blogs. Since these tips have helped me a lot, I am sure they will help a lot of my friends too. So I am always happy to provide great information I have procured from the sites I surf.

3.Comment on other related blogs

Commenting on other blogs is a great way to increase readers. I used to comment in a mechanical way just to increase my readership. Some of these sites I visited regularly, some others just for the sake of commenting. Whichever way, commenting is always good for you. Be a good friend and traffic will flow to you.

4.Post in social networking sites

Four social networking sites have worked best for me,they are Orkut, Stumble upon, Facebook and Twitter. Though I have tried Digg, since people in my part of the world are not regular diggers, I lost intrest in digging.Orkut has helped me greatly in establishing a successful web career.Try these and you will be happy having done so.

5.Create mailing list and keep contact with readers

Though I have not tried this , I a sure creating a mailing list would be a great idea. Because when people forget us, a great way to make them remember our blog is through a mail in their inbox. Be sure not to spam them.

Though I have a lot more tips to discuss, I am tired typing in. Check back again to find new tips and leave a comment below if you loved reading this post.
